Maharashtra Varshiki

One of the most significant publications by the Unique Academy is ‘Maharashtra Varshiki’. There was no single book in Marathi that gave detailed information on the social, cultural, geographical, economic, and political aspects of Maharashtra. The Unique Academy sought to fill this gap by publishing a Marathi year book – Maharashtra Varshiki since the year 2008-2009. In this pioneering work, it has attempted to cover all the significant aspects of the state including history, politics, geography, economics, theatre, cinema, music, art & craft and such other art forms, along with all the important current events that happened during that year. This first of its kind book, has proved to be very helpful for not only the aspirants for civil services but also for students, journalists, political office bearers and activists, administrators as well as general readers and hence has been very well received.

Varshiki is divided into 10 sections. The first section of ‘special articles’, comprises of articles written by experts in three sub-sections, namely – Maharashtra, India and the world. In this section, there are informative as well as analytical articles covering contemporary topics. This is certainly an enriching section which will not only give information but a critical insight to the reader about some of the pressing issues of the state, nation and the world.

The second section comprises of detailed information about the ancient, medieval and modern history of Maharashtra; history of Marathi newspapers and information about some of the leading newspapers in Marathi, an overview of Marathi Cinema of the past 50 years, details of various research institutes and museums in the state etc.

The third section elaborates on the geography of Maharashtra, tourist spots, pilgrim centers etc. Apart from this, there is exhaustive and detailed information regarding all the 35 districts in Maharashtra – their history, geographical location, society, industrial development, agriculture, statistics etc. along with the politics of that district. It is a very informative section which gives all the necessary details in a concise and lucid manner.

The forth section deals with the political system of Maharashtra. It covers the governmental and administrative machinery of the state, governmental training institutes, local self government, overview of the performance of all the Chief Ministers of Maharashtra, E-Governance initiatives, and articles on the political process as it has unfolded from 1960 to 2009. The politics of Maharashtra has been dealt with special emphasis on the political events, party and electoral politics, politics of OBCs, changing patterns in politics of Maharashtra, politics of social movements as well as analysis of the newly emerged parties and their politics. This section is a ‘must read’ for all those who are interested in understanding the pulse of politics in Maharashtra and the driving forces behind its twists and turns.

Section five has been especially devoted to various governmental schemes and plans for the upliftment and empowerment of the weaker sections of the society. It gives a detailed overview of the schemes for child welfare, women development, youth welfare, development of SC/STs, minority welfare, welfare of the handicapped, old age people, and laborers. This is a very useful section, as we seldom get to know about all such welfare schemes in detail at one place. This section aims at spreading awareness about these schemes especially among their beneficiaries so that they can take advantage of them.

Section six takes an extensive look at the economy of Maharashtra. It explores various elements of economy of Maharashtra such as population, state’s income, industries, agriculture, cooperative movement, public finance, prices, civil supplies, human development, poverty, employment, housing, energy, transport and communication, water supply, draught, banking and finance, regional imbalance and Special Economic Zones. It also throws light on Rural Development Programs and its various models. By giving official, updated and accurate information about the key areas in the economy of Maharashtra, this section proves to be an extremely useful reference regarding the economy of Maharashtra.

The Education System in Maharashtra has been discussed in the seventh section. Issues such as literacy, primary education, schemes for spreading education such as Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and mid-day meal scheme, schemes for promoting girls’ education, issue of school drop-outs, Right to Education Bill 2009, Adult education, higher education etc have been discussed in this section.

The eighth section titled ‘Architects of Maharashtra’ elucidates the contribution of those great souls who have shaped up the destiny of Maharashtra. Starting with Swami Chakradhar, this section gives a brief description of the great personalities who have substantially contributed to the social, cultural, political, literary life in Maharashtra ranging from saints, poets, authors, artists, film actors, filmmakers, musicians, sportsmen, scientists, social activists, scholars etc.

Section nine gives information about all the important current events at the regional, national and international level. This is a highly useful section for those who want to keep themselves updated about the current happenings around them – especially students preparing for civil services, journalists etc.

The tenth section ‘Maharashtra at a glance’ gives important statistics related to Maharashtra in a nutshell.

This is an extremely useful book for school-college students, teachers, parents, journalists, investors, administrative officers, tourists, political activists and office bearers, social activists and aspirants for civil services. Hence it is a ‘must buy’ book for all the conscientious citizens of Maharashtra.
